How do I calculate my real electricity cost per unit?
Short answer: Divide the total bill amount by the units (kWh) consumed. Example: a 3,000 bill for 400 units means your effective rate is 7.50 per unit, including fixed charges, taxes and slab effects. Divide units by billing days to get daily usage: 400 ÷ 30 = 13.3 kWh per day.
Typical household electricity use per month
Region / home type
Typical kWh per month
India – small city flat (fans, fridge, TV)
100–200 kWh
India – home with 1–2 ACs in summer
300–600 kWh
United Kingdom – average home
~225 kWh (about 2,700 kWh/year)
United States – average home
~860 kWh
UAE – villa with central cooling (summer)
2,000+ kWh
Tip: A first audit can usually cut 10–20% of the bill without losing comfort.
Using this calculator outside India? Outside India? Pick your currency at the top of the page and enter the per-kWh rate printed on your bill. Typical residential averages: USA 18.3¢/kWh (EIA, July 2026; California 33.6¢, Texas 15.9¢), UK about £0.25/kWh, Germany about €0.38/kWh, UAE about AED 0.23–0.38/kWh, Canada about C$0.13–0.20/kWh and Australia about A$0.30–0.35/kWh. The kWh result is the same in every country; only the cost changes.

Actual ₹/unit = bill amount ÷ bill units. This includes slab, fixed charges and taxes, so detailed appliance audit is needed for exact root cause.
This is a preliminary planning estimate. For certified audits, use site measurement and nameplate readings.
FAQ
Why is my cost per unit higher than the tariff?
Your bill adds fixed or meter charges, electricity duty, taxes and fuel adjustment charges, and slab tariffs charge more for higher consumption, so bill ÷ units is almost always above the base tariff.
Why is my rate different from tariff?
Bills include fixed charges, duties and slabs, so bill/unit is not the same as base tariff.
Can this tell exact appliance wastage?
Bill-only analysis cannot. Use full audit for appliance-wise mismatch.
Bill audit tip
If bill units and estimated appliance units do not match, run the full audit wizard to find missing loads.
Accuracy note
The result is a planning estimate. Use nameplate wattage, measured runtime and current tariff for professional-level accuracy.
What the analyzer is good for
Use it to quickly verify whether your monthly bill is broadly normal, high, or worth a deeper audit. That helps you decide whether free guidance is enough or if a manual premium review is worth paying for later.
How to get better accuracy
Enter the bill amount from your latest invoice, billed units, and the exact number of billing days. If your tariff has slabs, fixed charges or seasonal surcharges, the analyzer still gives a practical average rate.
Next best step
Compare this result with the full free home energy audit to identify the appliance groups most likely driving your bill. That is the fastest route to real savings without paying for unnecessary upgrades.
